The Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge has been a mess of accusations and counter-accusations this year. Complaints have been filed against it in two states and the Oglala Sioux Tribe has disavowed any connection with it. But organizer Jim Durham, who also calls himself Jim Red Cloud, say that’s just so much whining by folks who didn’t finish the Florida-to-Alaska ride.
Ruth Brown of the Rapid City (S.D.) Journal has the story here:
Durham and Beth Durham, both Hot Springs residents, helped coordinate the challenge, a cross-country motorcycle event from Key West, Fla., to Homer, Alaska. The entry fees were set at $1,000 per rider, and the first-place prize was listed as $500,000.
However, organizers have been beset with charges that the event was poorly organized and that rules were not set. In addition, apparent winner William Barclay, who crossed the finish line in Alaska on July 4, has yet to be paid. Barclay has passed the required drug test but also must pass a polygraph test.
Durham says the winner will be paid Aug. 11 during the Sturgis motorcycle rally. He also says some of the proceeds went to provide water to the Pine Ridge Reservation, but Oglala Sioux Tribe officials say they know of no such donation.
