mass1The Massachusetts Commission in Indian Affairs is pushing for legislation to change the state seal, which shows an image of a sword being raised over an Indian.

The seal, dating to the 1800s, usually interpreted this way: The hand holding the sword reprsents leadership, the sword itself stands for military justice and honor, and the Native American person represents the state’s heritage, according to Frank Mallicoat, of Fox 25 News in Boston, here.

More to the point, the seal is seemingly everywhere in government buildings and materials. The bill would require the change only on future depictions.
